mc chris w/ Richie Branson & Powerglove @ Atlanta 7.23.12

Here at Chasing Squirrelz we LOVE what we do, and we pride ourselves on our professionalism. We take ourselves and are shooting seriously. We, however are not always on the Job. This is one of those special moments when I was not “working” and was aloud to completely spaz out to music I absolutely love. The Drunken Unicorn is way to small of a venue to for former ATLien “mc chris”, because it ALWAYS sells out during pre-sale. Chris however, likes to venue because he gets to be close to his fans. So from the beginning:

Richie Branson is the newest rapper that is taking the nerdcore genre by storm. His anime raps have taken over the internet and in what seems like no time at all he has created the new theme song for adult swim’s TOONAMI block and his very first tour EVER happens to be national! You can tell when an artist doesn’t have much stage experience, especially with it being his first tour and all, but I’m sure this tour will be boot camp for him. He did however incorporate some performance elements in his set like having a break built into his track for “Tofu Delivery” so he could take a sip of water. He mingled with fans with small talk about his favorite characters and why he writes his songs. His “Open Letter to Square Soft” and songs from the his Wing Zero EP really got the crowd behind him, as well as his Jay Z inspired Star Wars rap “Cloud City Problems”. I look forward to hearing more of Richie in the future. I also bought a “I AM NERD” shirt from him.

Powerglove is a band that claims to “ruins your childhood” with an appearance that looks like Dungeons & Dragons players were some how granted the powers of rock gods, Powerglove rocks the house playing metal version of all your favorite childhood classics from the super mario soundtrack to the pokemon theme. Powerglove is the type of group where as soon you here them play, you fall in love instantly. All though this was suppose to be a “rap”tour, there is no mistaking that Powerglove’s fanbase grows at every show

This would be my 4th time seeing Chris Ward aka “mc chris” (always spelled lowercase) in a live performance and this by far was the greatest one ever. After paying respect for the victims of the Aurora CO tragedy, and encouraging everyone to keep liking batman, wearing costumes and being nerds,  mc proceeded to blow the crowds mind by preforming unheard remixes of his songs. Not knowing what track was coming next the crowd had to wait in silence before every song until chris began, then the audience would roar in unison with the lyrics. mc proceeded to play all his hits and closed out his setlist with his newest song “tastyface” a parody of “call me maybe” then preformed unexpectedly “I want Candy” a song he almost never does because it was for a cartoon character he provide the voice for. After mc finished his set list he performed another maybe 10 songs at request of the audience. His set was almost 2hrs long. It was nothing less than amazing. I could not believe that he just kept going. After all that the exhausted mc chris walked to the back of the venue to sign autographs for his fans and collect donations for Cystic Fibrosis, along with Richie and Powerglove
